Oura Health, the Finnish wearables company that has sold more than 5 million health-tracking rings, is betting on women’s health by launching its first proprietary large-tongue model designed specifically for women.
“We know historically that women have been underrepresented when it comes to a lot of things [medical and pharmaceutical] research,” Tanvi Jayaraman, MD, clinical leader of health AI at Aura, told Glossy. “We want to change that narrative when it comes to women’s health.”
LLMs are the brains behind AI chatbots, including Advisor Chat in the Aura app where users can ask for clarification on general health questions, their personal health data or in-depth medical questions.
“Women are looking for answers [about our health and bodies on the internet] Until the investigation is done, she said. “Answers [women are] Looking really diverse and scattered. They’re on a certain reddit forum, or they’re kind of word of mouth, so many [what we learn online is] Hypothesis-driven, one-time data collection.
Early last year, Dr. Jeraman’s team of board-certified clinicians launched Aura’s new LLM “training” with only the best information and studies available. This is in contrast to many other LLMs, which are largely trained online, which are taught by listening and causal communication as a matter of fact, Dr. Jeraman said.
“[When we’re able to] Pick and choose the right training data, the right resources, the right tips for women’s health, and then you can cut through some of that noise. [from the internet]she said “Of course, we have a long way to go when it comes to real research, but you have to start somewhere.”
Dr. Jeraman represents a new type of physician who implements the strategy of medicine, artificial intelligence and products.
After medical school at Stanford, she worked on AI strategy projects at Bain & Company, worked for global diagnostics and pharmaceutical companies, then on Apple’s clinical team, where she worked on next-generation digital health tools. She joined Aura last year.
Dr. Jeraman joins the Glossy Beauty Podcast to discuss Aura’s new women-focused LLM, the future of AI-powered health chatbots and more.
Advocate for women’s health in technology
“My big focus during medical school was actually on women’s health. I led the women’s health clinic at our free clinic at Stanford for a year. I think what we’re seeing is that women’s health has been underserved for a long time, and that’s kind of — all the data models that we’re seeing, and so we really wanted to change that according to our original LL data data and we customized with the LL data data. The clinical team of physicians and our now When OB-GYN practices, we really want to make sure that this LLM is used by today’s doctors in the real world, so it’s that information and knowledge that a big part of building this LLM is to make sure that we’re really able to get guidance from women and the support that they need is really reliable… We really feel that with AI covering possible health information, and we hope that it’s really exciting about the power of AI for other health conditions that he Connect to something that is actually related to what it is.
About creating a new LLM-powered chatbot persona
“Yes, the knowledge base is very important, but we’ve also trained the AI responses and improved them with real clinicians in the process. So it’s not enough for the AI to just pull from a specific knowledge base, but we also really need clinicians to evaluate each product and say, ‘Okay, should I really say this in the room?’ What is structure and form? What is tone? Where does empathy come in? What words do we use, about each aspect really intended? AI evaluation is also an important differentiator, and it’s very important for us at Aura to make sure we keep that clinic at the center of that process. So my role was really testing our AI, looking at thousands of AI products and giving feedback on which responses matched what I would say in my clinic. … We’re really building AI and fine-tuning it based on this real-world experience of today’s clinicians. And that’s another layer that really helped us build a product that we stand on.
